Transformational giving is “true north” giving

Got a great sermon by email this week from Dare2Share Ministries’ Greg Stier, who authored the preface to Coach Your Champions. (Greg’s preface is one of the best parts of the book, in my view).

In the sermon Greg sent this week he contrasts Transformational Giving (TG) and traditional transactional fundraising (ttf) by drawing an analogy between True North and Magnetic North.

Greg notes brilliantly that True North giving (TG, in other words) brings with it three “non-negotiable requirements” that are not even on the radar screen of Magnetic North givers (or askers, for that matter):

  1. Giving in the right way; that is, privately, not publicly.
  2. Giving for the right reasons; that is, for the applause of God and not men.
  3. Giving toward the right things; that is, to care for both the physical and the spiritual needs of others.

Magnetic North giving may have the power to make you feel good about yourself, notes Greg, but only True North giving will result in you feeling more passionate about the Kingdom. (That’s a great ask test, by the way.)

Anyway, the document is well worth the time of the (free) download and study. It may be a great way for pastors to begin to broach the subject of Transformational Giving with their congregations, as talk of traditional transactional fundraising (ttf) can come across as so much development shop talk rather than the spiritual dynamite that it is.

Click the link below for the download–and make sure to visit Greg’s blog, since everything Greg writes is well worth reading, in my view.
